Twelve Angry Men First Blog

The Eighth Juror: The eighth juror was one of the main people who felt strongly about making sure that the man who was convicted was actually guilty. Throughout the whole first scene, his actions convince me that he feels strongly about the conviction the man had received and how it could be wrong, based on evidence. He goes into detail about how the neighbor supposedly heard the murder say he was going to kill the victim was odd and did not really seem very likely.  He also talks about how the boy could have misplaced the knife that was the murder weapon and how raw of a deal the boy has had all through his life.  The way he defends the "murderer" makes me feel as though he also had a terrible experience as a child like he for some reason feels a deeper connection with this boy than the other jurors do. On page 13 he says "I think maybe we owe him a few words. That's all." He is compassionate and believes in giving people chances despite the pressure from a...

Final VS Draft Mini Essay One (practice exercise)

Three Things That Were Changed: Shortened the intro, it was originally in the draft long enough to be a short body paragraph. Thesis statement is less wordy & yet more detailed, making it appear as though the writer has become more comfortable with how they view the films. There seemed to be confusion or disorganization of thoughts in the first draft, however the final draft is much more organized and precise about detail.  Got rid of the long sentences explaining what art is meant to make us see and what kinds of art that there is, which seemed out of place or of little importance. Two Things That Are Done Well: Final is more detailed and more clear than the first draft which is very wordy and more focused on what art makes us see and what art is rather than the pieces themselves Less use of the word "We" throughout, more professional rather than casual writing.

Mini Essay Draft 3 Passengers/Wishing Well

Both "Wishing Well" and "Passengers" are about the disconnect from reality and how necessary this human connection is despite societal pressures to remain distant from this closeness. We need to connect with one another in order to actually feel and observe what is occurring in the real world around us. By allowing ourselves to engage in contact with "strangers" feelings of joy or comfort can be evoked from within.  The understanding of strangers in the poem "Wishing Well" comes into play and helps express this message the poet, Gregory Pardlo, is in fact trying to convey to the readers. While strangers normally express some sort of danger that we as humans distance ourselves from they take on an entirely opposite meaning in this piece. Strangers allow the narrator and the other man at the outside of the stadium to create a bond that proves to be special to the narrator who at first seems to be unconcerned about anything going on around him. Th...

Mini Essay Draft 1 & 2 Passengers/Wishing Well

Art does make us see the world in a new and different way by allowing us to look deeper into everyday objects or ideas, connoting them to give them greater meaning. In order for one to understand the meaning behind the art piece(s), one must be able to analyze and observe. In both "Wishing Well" and "Passengers", the underlying message is the lack of connection between people that is pressured by societal standards which creates a feeling of loneliness and how finally connecting can provoke feelings of joy or comfort. The poem "Wishing Well" by Gregory Pardlo focuses on how much comfort one can find in someone that they do not even know. For a reader who doesn't analyze and connote it seems like a pointless poem about making a wish with some stranger. But to someone who looks at this as a piece of art with deeper meaning, this poem expresses the pressures to ignore strangers that are pushed on us by society. There are many connotative moments tha...

Group 1 "Wishing Well" Response Further

Frisking: skip or leap playfully; frolic or also  to   search   (a   person)   for   concealed   weapons,   contraband   goods,   etc., by   feeling   the   person's   clothing This term itself used when talking about the season of autumn/fall obviously means the frolic part of the definition because the leaves have all fallen "playfully" from the trees due to the season change. Applying the second definition to the part a bout frisking autumn, the trees are bare making it hard to conceal anything. However when applied to the whole poem and in relation to touch/communication it is the second part of the dictionary definition which deals with searching by touch. This has to go along with the idea of connection, especially when the speaker and the other man hold hands (they are now touching) by the wishing well which brings the speaker/narrator a sense of comfort.  Waiver:  an intentional relinquishment ...

Wishing Well Response

Outside of the MET a man confronts the speaker and asks if the monument is a wishing well also. Than proceeds to talk to the speaker and express that he will be putting a coin in for the speaker as well as one for himself. The speaker's movements and dialogue in the very beginning of the poem expresses his lack  of concern for what is going on around him in the world, that includes personal contact/discussion. He shrugs at the man who asks him a question about the wishing well and even mentions feeling or being "alone".  There is also a sense of class ism when the speaker judges the man based on the clothing he wears and says "he will ask me for fifty cents any minute now...".  His thoughts make him appear to have an existing prejudice against people who aren't dressed to the nines. I think this goes back to societal ideas, just like about strangers being dangerous, that strangers who are dressed poorly are even worse. He continuously makes statements that...

"Passengers" Review

For me the artist communicates a sense of sadness and loneliness within the main male character despite the fact that he is in a city and on a subway full of people. The feather for me made me wonder if the woman whom he sees on the train is actually dead because towards the end of the film he thinks he sees her but than he sees an older woman. Feathers can sometimes symbolize messages from loved ones, in some cultures. This happens around 5 minutes and 40 seconds. This part caught my eye instantly and I went back to view this scene again multiple times. While this idea might seem far fetched it makes a lot of sense to me. All of these people around him try to avoid the feather and give him strange looks when he smiles across the isle. Perhaps they cannot see the female that he is having fun with. I am not going to lie this short film was very hard for me to process and comprehend because there is no dialogue and that is difficult for me to interpret sometimes. Another way of looking...
