Chapter 8-17 "extremely loud and incredibly close"
Chapter 8 switches back to Grandma's story and focuses on when her husband finally leaves her for good, not returning. This happens after she gets pregnant and informs him of the pregnancy, he stays only for a day and than leaves, never to come back. She is left alone now with this child. There is a strong feeling/mood of sadness in this chapter, you can relate to how alone she is feeling and can begin to imagine how frightened she must be not knowing what will happen next.
Chapter 9 switches back to Oskar, where he faces his fear of trains/subways with Mr. Black. He is becoming aware that he cannot overcome his fears in life on his own and that it is easier to do if you have a companion near you to help you through it. Oskar starts therapy with a therapist who only makes his anger towards the situation with his dad's death worse and creates a feeling of hatred towards the therapist. Dr. Fien is worried that Oskar will hurt himself, which I didn't understand because while Oskar does have strange interests and thoughts I did not assume this. His mother ends the sessions after the doctor wants him hospitalized.
Chapter ten focuses on grandpa, who discusses his letters that he sends to his unborn son since the day he found out of Anna's pregnancy. Than he goes on to discuss the tragic bombing of Dresden and the killings that took place.
Chapter eleven is the sixth borough story that Oskar is told by his father about the borough that supposedly floated off and that is where central park originally was. This is the last real life in person conversation that Oskar has with his father before he dies in the tragedy of 9/11.
Chapter twelve is when Anna hears about 9/11 and worries if her son is still alive after the attack. Than she goes on to write about Thomas's funeral and how her husband returns home.
Chapter thirteen focuses on Oskar being on his own again when Mr. Black tells him he is no longer going to help him on his search. Before this happens though, they meet more Blacks including Ruth Black who Mr. Black is fond of. Oskar decides that night that he may want to dig up his dad's coffin.
Chapter fourteen goes back to Grandpa when he gets on the plane to come to Grandma after the tragedy of 9/11 and he brings all of the letter he never sent to Thomas with him. Grandpa and Oskar grow closer, talking to the different Blacks together and than Oskar shares his grave digging idea with him.
Chapter fifteen is when Oskar finally finds out where this key goes to and it is the key to William Black's father's safe deposit box. Oskar shares the secret about the phone call from his father with William.
Chapter sixteen switches back to Grandma, who discusses how it is always important to tell someone you love them and regrets not telling her sister when she had the chance.
Chapter seventeen is the end when Oskar digs up his dad's grave and how he realizes that he wishes he could change how things ended with his dad.
